Rantapao is a lush, mountainous region of caves, waterfalls and large shallow lakes. Its eight million inhabitants include the seafaring Bugis and Makassarese and the Toraja, known for their unique culture. Rantepao is the largest town in the area, and as the main tourist centre it’s a good place to base yourself whilst you explore. The best time to visit this area is between late March, at the end of the wet season, and June.
