Quang Binh province is famous for its caves, incredible mountain scenery, and its sprawling beaches, along with unforgettable hospitality and friendliness. Situated 40 kilometres northwest of its provincial capital and built along the Son River, the small village of Son Trach (also referred to as Phong Nha) is growing to meet the growing number of tourists flocking to explore these underground worlds. First nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and recognized as one in 2003, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is truly a marvel of nature. The fact that the Phong Nha cave system is home to the world’s biggest cave – Hang Son Doong – is what attracts passionate adventurers worldwide. The Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam contains the oldest karst system in Asia, between 400-450 million years old. Hang Son Doong (Son Doong Cave) itself is relatively young, with the analysis of sediment dating it to be only 3 million years old.
